The practical consequence is that an interim figure is a poor guide to the final one. Interim maintenance is fixed quickly, often on affidavits alone and without proper discovery of income. Permanent alimony comes after the evidence.
Why the interim number still matters
Because it anchors everything that follows. A low interim order is hard to argue away from at the final hearing, and it sets the tone for settlement talks. It is worth putting proper material before the court at the interim stage rather than treating it as a formality.
It also runs for a long time. Indian matrimonial litigation measured in years is normal, so an interim order is frequently the operative order for most of the dispute.

Is interim maintenance adjusted against permanent alimony?
Amounts already paid are normally taken into account when the final order is made. Rajnesh v. Neha requires overlapping claims to be disclosed so that a court can adjust one against another.
How long does interim maintenance last?
Until the main petition is decided, or until the order is varied. In practice that can be several years.
