These are the cases the estimator draws on. They come from the Supreme Court and from nineteen High Courts, and they run from 1970 to this year. Coverage is uneven in the way reported case law always is: financial detail survives in some reports and not others, and a great many maintenance orders are never reported at all.

The second figure under each award is that award in today's money. It is the most useful column here and the one you will not find on another Indian maintenance site. Rs 500 a month ordered in 1985 is not a trivial sum. It is around Rs 8,100 a month now.

Reading the columnThe middle monthly award in this group, restated in today's money, is Rs 15,984. Half sit below it and half above. It is a median, not a target, and it says nothing about what any particular set of facts is worth.
